Impact of Sanctions on Medical Education: An Overview and Implications for Policy and Research

Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this review is to analyze the effects of international economic sanctions onmedical education in Iran, Prior Iran has faced various international sanctions that have significantlyimpacted its economy. While the economic consequences are well-documented, evidence of the socialrepercussions, particularly in higher education, is scarce. To gather relevant evidence, three databases andgrey literature were examined. Two authors worked together to eliminate duplicates and screen the papers,Results The review highlighted that sanctions could potentially damage medical education, encompassingreduced publications, decreased international collaboration, and diminished funding. These adverse impactscan ultimately undermine a country;s academic capabilities in the long term. Sanctions might encouragescholars to develop greater self-reliance, Implications More investigations are needed to quantify the effectsof sanctions on medical education. Policymakers should explore ways to facilitate knowledge exchange andcollaboration without relying solely on traditional international collaborations, and Value The reviewaddresses a research gap by focusing on the social consequences of sanctions. It encourages internationalbodies to explore new ways to facilitate global knowledge exchange. The findings can be applied to othercountries facing similar challenges and serve as a foundation for comparative studies.
