The Power to Regulate: Analysing the EU AI Act
Abstract
In the last decade we have witnessed the rapid development of technology and the intensification of its use. As has been the case with other inventions and developments, this has underlined a number of different challenges. In this context, the European Commission has proposed in 2021 a draft for the AI Act, which aimed to regulate the use of AI. Following the decision-making process in the EU, in March 2024 the plenary session of the European Parliament has endorsed the Artificial Intelligence Act making it the first law in the world which will regulate for example, how artificial intelligence is used for biometric identification. This paper will analyse EU’s capacity to formulate regulations and how this may contribute to its identity.
